Speech-language therapists are the only professionals qualified to assess, diagnose and treat:

Speech delay/disorders. A speech delay/disorder is when a person is unable to produce sounds correctly. Examples include difficulties producing certain sounds (articulation disorders). Sometimes children find it hard to even imitate the sound.

Language delay/disorders. A language delay/disorder is when a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language) or has trouble sharing thoughts, ideas and feelings (expressive language).

Stammering/stuttering. A stammer is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions and prolongations of sounds, syllables, words or phrases as well as involuntary silent pauses or blocks in which the person who stutters is unable to produce sounds.

Voice problems. Most commonly persistent hoarseness resulting from vocal misuse and abuse unless a medical condition has been diagnosed.

Speech and language disorders can affect children and adults. While they can be the result of a medical condition such as a cleft lip and palate or a neurological condition, the cause is often not known.

Communication difficulties can lead to frustration and negatively affect a child’s self confidence. If speech and language difficulties are not treated early, children can go on to have greater difficulties with literacy, social skills, and cognitive skills.

Responsibilities
– To assess, diagnose and provide intervention for children and adults with communication difficulties.
– To liaise with teachers, allied health professionals, and other professionals as needed.
– To support families and staff in facilitating speech and language development in the home and individual’s environment.
